Why Chinese Cars Demand Specialist ADAS Calibration

Chinese vehicles — whether EV, hybrid or petrol — are fitted with some of the most sophisticated ADAS systems on the market. Models like the BYD Atto 3, MG4, and Jaecoo J7 come equipped with forward-facing radar, multi-camera lane assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and in many cases, full 360-degree surround-view camera systems as standard.

Calibrating these systems correctly is not straightforward. Many Chinese models require a working area of up to 100 square metres for 360-camera calibration alone. Forward camera and radar targets need 8 to 10 metres of unobstructed clear space. Floor level must be precise, lighting must be controlled, and targets must be placed to exact OEM tolerances.

General workshops — and even many ADAS providers — simply don’t have the space, the equipment, or the vehicle-specific data to calibrate these systems to manufacturer standards. Attempting calibration in an undersized or uneven environment doesn’t just produce an incorrect result. It produces a vehicle that appears calibrated but isn’t — a genuine road safety risk.
